It began as a late-night thought experiment – a 17th-century pirate and time traveller now working as a party performer - and from there, improbably, into the final 16 at Tropfest from over 3,000 entries. The short film, Jackie's Spring Palace, was never meant to go far, but when broadcasters saw its surreal tone and absurdist bite, they wanted more.

A development deal with Fox followed. Eight half-hour episodes were commissioned for the curiously titled 'The Man Friday Project'. But when a commissioning editor and fan of the project moved on, the series was shelved — until now.
